Pinot Noir Spielmann

Red Wine
2024

Tasting note

Words are truly inadequate for a wine that leaves us speechless this year. Extraordinary! Vibrant! Transcendent! It plays with emotions, has rough edges and yet a unique harmony and balance. Complex, spicy, primarily fruity and vegetal with a mineral acidity and tannin structure and tremendous length. The only downside: there are only 582 bottles of it.

Description

Since 2013, we have vinified the grapes from the Spielmann vineyard to produce a single-vineyard Pinot Noir. The Burgundy clones in Spielmann lignify early, so the conditions are ideal for fermenting them with an 80% whole grape content.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir. We press Spielmann grapes grown in 26 acres of vines planted with Burgundy clones 777 and 943.

Vineyard

Spielmann. The Spielmann Rebberg vineyard is located right next to the Fidler vineyard. The Burgundy vines, which were planted in 2005, are low-yielding but of exceptional quality. We are perfectly happy if we can produce 2–3 barriques per year.

Soil

Although the Spielmann is located right next to the Fidler, its soil is heavier and contains more clay. The soil profile comprises limestone, slate and loam.

Viticulture

We cultivate our vines using natural, holistic methods. In accordance with the principles of regenerative agriculture, we use various seeds and compost teas, and we are certified organic by Bio-Suisse and Knospe.

Maturation

For the Spielmann Pinot Noir, the grapes are harvested with their stems still attached, and 80% of them are fermented this way. The resulting wine is then aged for 12 months in 225-litre French barriques, 33% of which are new.

Spielmann

Spielmann is the easternmost of our three low-lying vineyards and can be seen directly from our winery. Georg planted the 26-acre vineyard with two different clones of Pinot Noir from Burgundy, which produce superb grapes for a legendary wine.

This is a vineyard of great elegance and feminine energy. It has always been passed down the maternal line, most recently from Annetta Thöny to her four granddaughters: Salome, Mirjam, Bettina and Nadja. Located at an altitude of 529 metres, the Spielmann vineyard has a high proportion of clay, slate and loam, and is the epitome of small-scale Pinot Noir production. In 2005, we planted the 26-acre vineyard with low-yield, high-quality Burgundy Pinot Noir clones 777 and 943. Since 2013, we have produced an average of just two barriques, or 600 bottles, of this unique Spielmann Pinot Noir from these vines.
