Tasting note

Our 2024 Orange boasts a subtly spicy bouquet of white tea, nutmeg, peach, lavender and rose petals. It has a juicy, pure and fresh palate. The tannins are present, but not bitter or astringent. It is a wonderful accompaniment to food and can also be served slightly chilled as an aperitif.

Description

Our orange wine is completely undogmatic in the classic sense: it is a white wine that has been vinified like a red. It is cleanly fermented, spending 2–3 weeks on the mash, and no added sulphur is used at any stage.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Gris. It is the Pinot Gris that gives orange wine its mineral structure, colour, and delicately tart aroma.

Vineyard

Ratschelga & Selviteiler. The old vines in the Ratschelga vineyard were planted by Georg and Ruth in 1982. The younger 15 acres of Pinot Gris in Selviteiler were planted in 2018.

Soil

The Ratschelga vineyard is located at our original site, right in the heart of the village. Our highest vineyard, at 590 metres, is characterised by slate, limestone and magnetite. The Selviteiler vineyard (531 m) has a soil made up of loam and sand.

Viticulture

We cultivate our vines using natural, holistic methods. In accordance with the principles of regenerative agriculture, we use various seeds and compost teas, and we are certified organic by Bio-Suisse and Knospe.

Maturation

The Pinot Gris grapes used for the two annual Orange barrels are harvested at around 92 degrees Oechsle. They are then destemmed, fermented on the skins and left on the mash for around 18 days. The wine is then aged in old barriques.
