Pinot Noir Fidler

Red Wine
2023

Tasting note

As usual, it boasts exceptional clarity and complexity of fruit. There are notes of morello cherry, strawberry, dark currant, violet, slate and a hint of clove. The palate is pure and juicy yet dynamic. The classic Fidler tannin is both grippy and velvety soft. The complex finish sees spicy notes paired with deep fruit.

Description

Since 2012, we have vinified the grapes from the Fidler vineyard to produce a single-vineyard Pinot Noir. The old Swiss vines consistently produce a wine with an expressive yet velvety tannin structure. The result is elegance, purity and dark fruit.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir. We press the Fidler Pinot Noir from just 27 acres of Swiss Pinot Noir vines, which were planted in 1979. The exact clones used will remain a secret forever.

Vineyard

Fidler. The Fidler vineyard is located between Spielmann and Schöpfi, at an altitude of 532 metres. With just 27 acres of land, we produce only 2–3 barriques of wine each year, which makes Fidler a truly worthy example of a 'small vineyard'.

Soil

The soil in the Fidler vineyard contains high levels of limestone, slate and loam. The deep vineyards near the valley floor have been most strongly influenced by Rhine sediments.

Viticulture

We cultivate our vines using natural, holistic methods. In accordance with the principles of regenerative agriculture, we use various seeds and compost teas, and we are certified organic by Bio-Suisse and Knospe.

Maturation

The grapes used to make Pinot Noir Fidler are completely destemmed and fermented spontaneously. The resulting wine is then aged for 12 months in 225-litre French barriques, 33% of which are new.

Fidler

The Fidler vineyard is located on the south-western edge of the village, directly opposite our winery and between Spielmann and Schöpfi. In 1979, Georg planted the 27-acre vineyard with an ingenious Swiss Pinot Noir clone. Which clone exactly? Only the vine gods know that now.

We find it delightful and mysterious that the Pinots from this old vineyard always have a dense yet silky-fine, typically Fidler-esque tannin profile. Is it the soil, which has a high proportion of limestone, slate and loam? Or is it the Swiss Pinot Noir vines that Georg planted in 1979, the clones of which he no longer remembers? What is clear is that the Fidler vineyard, at 535 metres above sea level, is one of our three lowest sites and is therefore strongly influenced by Rhine sediments. Since 2012, we have vinified the grapes from Fidler as a single-vineyard Pinot Noir.
