Pinot Noir Michel

Red Wine
2023

Tasting note

The 2023 Michel reveals an inviting bouquet of wild berries, sour cherries, cassis, spruce and St John's wort leaves on the nose. It has a soft entry, a balanced, full-bodied mid-palate with fine-grained tannins, and spicy notes of pepper and nutmeg. It has a long finish with elegantly integrated wood.

Description

Le Charmeur. A single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Michel Rebberg. Swiss vines were planted here in 1999. The grapes are completely destemmed and fermented. Thanks to their thicker grape skins, the Michel vines always produce an intense tannin structure, a dense colour and dark fruit.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir. We press Pinot Noir Michel from 40 acres of 10-55 clone Swiss Pinot Noir vines.

Vineyard

Michel. The Michel vineyard is located at an altitude of 546 metres, bordering the western outskirts of Malans. It is one of the oldest vineyards in the village.

Soil

The vineyard of Michel lies in the middle of a glacial debris cone close to the village. Over the centuries, humans have also shaped the soil through tilling. The soil contains clay, slate and limestone.

Viticulture

We cultivate our vines using natural, holistic methods. In accordance with the principles of regenerative agriculture, we use various seeds and compost teas, and we are certified organic by Bio-Suisse and Knospe.

Maturation

The Pinot Noir Michel grapes are completely destemmed and fermented spontaneously. The resulting wine is then aged for 12 months in 225-litre French barriques, 33% of which are new.

Michel

Michel is a hidden gem of a vineyard. Nestled within ancient walls, it is located on the western edge of the village, on a street bearing its name. We lease forty acres of Swiss Pinot Noir clones from Heidi Fromm on the Michel plot.

The Michel vineyard is one of the oldest in Malans, and the historic Michel patrician house is one of the most beautiful in the village. Located at an altitude of 546 metres on the western edge of the village, the Michel vineyard sits on the border between the residential and vineyard areas. The soil is characterised by the Malans Rüfen, which is rich in clay, slate and limestone. In 1999, Heidi Fromm planted 10–55 Swiss Pinot Noir vines on the 40-acre site. Since 2018, we have been producing a single-vineyard Pinot Noir made from a pure Swiss clone, sourced from the idyllic Michel vineyard.
